Monochrome Really Quick Newsletter

Issue: #2
17th April 2000

This is part of a series of semi-regular newsletters sent out to users of the Monochrome BBS to let you know what's going on in and around Mono. This is necessarily brief: for more information on the topics covered, check the references given (keypaths and web pages).

The 'Monozine'

The first edition of the Monochrome online magazine will be available later this month: keep an eye on the website and the System News file for an announcement.

o System News <INS>

Java telnet client

Now available on the web pages is a Java telnet client for Monochrome. The client allows you to connect to Monochrome within your web browser.

It supports full colour terminal emulation. Note that you must have Java support enabled in your browser in order for it to work. The client is available from http://www.mono.org/connect/jconnect.shtml.

Talker

A little-used feature of Monochrome is its talker. Sometimes when you're talking to a number of people about the same thing it's easier to chat to everyone at once in real-time than use the messaging system. To access the Talker, you can simply type [ESC][T] at any point. Once in the Talker, .help will give you some basic help. The Talker help file is available at <IHUK> and http://www.mono.org/help/users/talker.html. During the night (UK time), try visiting 'mimic' on the Talker and speaking to her...

User Survey

If you've logged into Monochrome in the last month or two, you will have received a message giving you a personalised URL to a questionnaire.

Thanks for all your responses, although a few people experienced some teething problems with the software. We're currently sifting through the responses; we'll make appropriate announcements when we publish results of the analysis.

mono.org System News:

Enigma has been declared officially dead. It's one of the oldest machines in the cluster, and we just don't have the spare parts etc required to get it working again. Consequently, there is now no machine available for the MUDs that Enigma formerly hosted (Darkcity, Dimensions and NewDawn).

Mono 'downtime' list

Occasionally, Monochrome or mono.org experience some downtime, either because of necessary maintenance or unforeseen problems. Where downtime is anticipated, details will be added to the Message Of The Day, and sent to subscribers of the mono-downtime email list. To subscribe to the list, send an email to [email protected] with the following content:

Mono's status

A new service is being developed that will be able to give you the current "status" of Mono. It will be provided by a number of machines that are not physically within the cluster, so you can get a status update even when there are problems within the cluster. The status service will be available by telnet and over the web. We'll issue further information when it is fully operational.

New version of Mono software

We were expecting to install a new version of the Mono software in March, however this didn't happen. Release of the new software has been delayed until the inclusion of a new feature is completed. Details of Mono software problems are at <IBP>.

Website Associate programme:

Amazon (book and CD Internet retailer) We've received more than 100 pounds over the last 6 months through the Associate programme with Amazon. Please use our links when going to their site, and a percentage of purchases you make will contribute more to Monochrome (at no cost to yourself)!

Mono Equipment Fund <IF>

We've now raised 330 pounds, just about enough for the new controller and disk. Thanks to 'evolution' and others for recent donations. Also, special thanks to 'culture' who donated a 4Gb disk to replace the one developing problems on main server, and to 'ghoul' who supplied a DLT drive for backups and a Sparc 5/70 workstation.

Something to add?

If you have something to contribute to a future newsletter, or there is something you'd like to see mentioned, please let us know! Send a message to 'culf' or email [email protected].
