The Monochrome Bulletin Board, and all other services offered by mono.org are done so entirely free of charge. The system is kept running by the kind donations of its users. Most hardware used in the mono.org cluster is quite old, and none of it is under a maintenance contract of any sort. When something breaks, it needs replacing, which costs money.
