Monochrome Really Quick Newsletter
Issue #3 This is part of a series of semi-regular newsletters sent out to users of the Monochrome BBS to let you know what's going on in and around Monochrome. This particular edition is rather longer than normal as it has been a while since the previous one. Apologies for that. For more information on the topics covered, check the references given (keypaths and web pages). unsubscribe newsletter There be changes ahead ...Admin member rik has now assumed the mantle of 'monoadm' from norm. As a consequence, a number of changes are afoot. Details are being hammered out at the moment; the next edition of the newsletter in a few weeks will give information on some of the changes that have taken place and those that are still to come.SoupBefore his recent departure, one of former resident wizard and general tinkerer amf's most recent developments was the creation of a new interactive system whereby ordinary users can be allowed to set up discussion files. This allows files to be created in response to current events or evolving topics of discussion without the requirement to wait for a moderator to turn up.The main Soup area is soup:debates at <MS>, and there is another called soup:humour at <EHS>. However, members of staff can also use Soup within their own sections (see <ITSUS>). My Favourite SectionsAnother soup-based application. This feature allows you to build your own menu containing just the sections you are interested in, similar to the 'bookmarks' or 'favourites' of web browsers. You can set up and access your favourites at <MY>.Vote Of The WeekA new facility whereby periodically Admin will pose a question, and seek feedback on a number of options. It is hoped to run a vote roughly every week on some aspect of Mono, from which we can gauge the response to proposals, suggestions, etc. Questions can also be suggested by other staff and users. Vote Of The Week is available at <MV>.Mono's statusYou can now check Mono's current status using any telnet client:telnet status.mono.org This service is hosted by machines physically outside of the mono.org cluster, so should be available even when there are problems within the cluster. Don't forget you can also check the current status over the web and from within Monochrome at <IML>. MeetsThe following Meets are planned. Check out the keypaths for more info:
Want to organise a meet for your area? Go to "Meet Proposals" <MMP>! Monochrome BallThe Monochrome Ball is a black tie/smart dress event to celebrate 10 years of Monochrome. It is scheduled for October 13th at Old Town Hall in Stratford, London. The ticket deposit is 30 pounds, due in June. Precise details are changing fast, so check <MMO> for the latest.New/Re-opened SectionsThe following are new, have recently re-opened under new ownership, or have been restructuted/revitalised since the last Newsletter. Some rationalisation of Monochome is planned for the coming months, so there will be more changes
IdlingIf you are logged into Monochrome but are inactive for some time, you will reach the 'idle limit', and be automatically disconnected. Some people have attempted to avoid this by running so-called "anti-idl"e scripts that enforce some activity, even though they may not be at the keyboard themselves. This activity has previously been frowned upon, as it is considered anti-social. We decided to increase the idle limits to around 90 minutes, however we now completely disallow the use of all anti-idle scripts. Anyone found employing such means may have their access to Monochrome limited or terminated.mono.org System NewsAs you're probably aware, Monochrome, and the cluster of machines it runs on, was relocated last year, after 9 years of being generously hosted at City University in London. There have been a few problems in the new location, but hopefully things should have settled down now.New version of Mono softwareWork continues afresh on the new version of the Mono software, that will resolve various long-standing bugs. Implementation date is expected to be in the next few months, more details in the next Newsletter. Details of Mono software problems are at <IBP>.Something to add?If you have something to contribute to a future newsletter, or there is something you'd like to see mentioned, please let us know!
