Monochrome Really Quick Newsletter

Issue #4
21st December 2001

A semi-regular newsletter sent out to users of the Monochrome BBS to let you know what's going on in and around Mono. This is necessarily brief: for more information on the topics covered, check the references given (keypaths and web pages).

If you do not wish to receive future editions of this Newsletter, you can update your subscription information on Monochrome at <IIN>. Alternatively, send an email to "nl-unsubscribe+<account>@mono.org", substituting your account's name for "<account>". A message will be sent to your Monochrome account to confirm the action.

You can now subscribe/unsubscribe from newsletter in <IIN>
Subscription information for the newsletter is now maintained within Monochrome itself. You can see and alter your current status, including the email address to which the newsletter is sent, by visiting <IIN>.

Account maintanance

You can request some account-related tasks, including applying for new accounts, having an unknown password changed, and requesting an email address change, at this page.

Monoball

The Monoball was cancelled due to lack of interest. The Cancellation statement is at <MMOC>.

Meets

Only the following Meet is currently planned. Check out the keypaths for more info:

  • Southampton Xmas Meet (21--23 Dec) <MMS>

Don't forget the "locals" in various areas often organise so-called "micro-meets", to which non-locals are always welcome. They are discussed at <MMU>. A number of micro-meets will no doubt be planned for the festive season.

Want to organise a meet for your area? Go to "Meet Proposals" <MMP>!

Talker

We're keen to promote the use of the talker as an easy efficient means of holding conversations either with one person or a group of people. <ITT> lists Monochrome users who are familiar with the Talker and are happy to help others with talker commands, etc.

Changes at administrative level

There have been a number of changes within the admin group. Under the new leadership of rik, norm is now concentrating on managing the mono.org cluster of machines. A number of admin have left the group (deorth, nostra, tugs, mirath), and new admin have been appointed (poppy and clout). Tasks have been redistributed: poppy will look after web and talker issues; culf takes over as Complaints admin; clout will initially work with culf on the Newsletter. sigje has also stepped down from her position co-ordinating web site content. Many thanks to her for all her work on the site.

Each Main Menu option now has a "Menu Head" assigned, who isn't necessarily a member of the admin group, and there are "Menu Helpers" assigned where necessary to help administrative processes within the main menus along. nostra remains Menu Head for Science, Technology and Medicine <T>, quaestor takes over the News and Media <N> menu, and nemo now looks after the Society and Culture <C> option. flippy, norm, tugs and culf remain Menu Heads for Recreation, Help and Information, Monochrome Users, and Entertainment respectively.

Downsizing and changes of ownership

Most sections of Mono have been reviewed by the admin team and their owners, and in most cases alterations and improvements have been made, a procedure referred to as "downsizing" as it is intended to tighten up sections, removing dead files that give a bad impression, revitalising others, and so on.

As part of this process, some sections have changed ownership or have been consolidated, and there has been an effort to cross-link files between existing sections where there is a clear relationship.

New version of Mono software

Work continues ironing out bugs and testing the new version of the Mono software (informally referred to as "monodot"). Tjfas is co-ordinating the testing with help from users. Operating System upgrades are also planned for the Mono server and client hosts.

Season's Greetings

Finally, we wish all members of the Monochrome community the best wishes of the season. Mono will be running throughout the holiday period, but obviously access will be limited for many people, including members of staff and admin. Please be aware that response times for requests may be considerably longer than normal. Happy holidays!

Something to add?

If you have something to contribute to a future newsletter, or there is something you'd like to see mentioned, please let us know! Send a message to culf or clout or email [email protected].
