This started off life as a local mirror of the LAL Cat Archive, created by Kelly Hall at Brigham Young University. At the time he was running out of space, and it looked as if the archive would disappear from the net, which would have been a pity. He was looking for people to mirror it, so, as I had the space, the WWW server, and like moggies......
Over the Five years(Four on this machine) (I think) the mirror has been in existance, it has been somewhat expanded in size and scope.
Thanks to a wee bit of bother with the CSD at City, the server on eeisun2.city.ac.uk can no longer be accessed via its registered hostname, so the cats have moved here to mono, thanks to abs for allowing me .
Another expanded mirror of the LAL archive exists at the UiO Cat Archive in Norway, maintained by Jon Wikne.
The current phase of modifications and expansion started off as an experiment to see if I could speed up access to individual images by creating seperate html documents for each of the main sections of the archive, then I found the Big Cats Info page, run by Paul Cannon (see acknowledgements ), and ended up including the text descriptions for the individual species, from there, the small inline images were the next logical step.
Rant
I received an email recently (4-1999) which more or less accused me of 'ripping off' someone's site in the US, I cant remember the URL (it was on the bookmarks of my NT account before my profile screwed up, If I get it again I'll put it up here), but looking at the site in question, I could see his point.
Other than Incorporating the Original LAL archive and the data from abovementioned pages into mine with both the original authors consent, I've never 'ripped off' any pages, If I could be bothered I'd try and get the extracts from server logs to prove these pages existed before this site in the states did,
I should also point out that this was all done for the sake of doing it, with no fancy html editors (hence no embedded dates, author names etc on any of these pages), no sponsorship etc etc, and it obviously hasnt been worked on for several years.
I think it's all a bit bloody sad the way the thing (WWW) has gone, too many breadheads and 'arent-i-a-clever-little-shite-i-can-use-frontpage' types.
End of Rant
Since this was written, a number of the cats have died, or just went
missing, and technology has moved on over the past five years, so I have
scanned images of the moggies, I'll put up the pictures sometime, meanwhile,
here's a picture of author
of this nonsense being used as a bed by one of my landlord's siamese (Barak).
(It was a long day...I crashed)
From Kelly Hall's original page...
For no good reason, I've been slowly collecting and hoarding
lots of pictures of various kinds of cats. Here they are, in no
particular order.
Ah well, there's a bit of a paradox here, this copy of the Archive is being organised by one of natures born Anarchists. :)
